Starter Fertilizer for Sprigging and Sod — Ignition 20-23-15

Establishing new turfgrass—whether via sod, sprigs, or seed—is a race against time and environmental stress. The plant has been severed from its established root system or is starting entirely from scratch. In these critical early weeks, the primary agronomic objective is rapid root development. Without a functional root system, the turf cannot access water or nutrients, leaving it highly vulnerable to heat and drought. Where a soil test and local regulations support phosphorus use, a starter fertilizer like Ignition 20-23-15 provides a nutrient profile built for establishment.

The defining characteristic of a starter fertilizer is elevated Phosphorus (the middle number in the N-P-K analysis). While mature, established turf requires very little supplemental phosphorus, establishing turf demands it in large quantities.

The Role of Phosphorus in Establishment Phosphorus is the primary driver of root initiation and early development. It is a critical component of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy currency of the plant. The massive energy required to push new roots into the soil profile is fueled by phosphorus. Furthermore, phosphorus is immobile in the soil. It does not move readily with water like nitrogen does. Therefore, to be effective, phosphorus must be placed immediately adjacent to the developing root zone at the time of planting.

When laying sod, the existing roots have been sheared off. The sod must quickly generate new adventitious roots to tack down into the underlying soil. If phosphorus is deficient, this tacking process is significantly delayed, leaving the sod vulnerable to desiccation and requiring excessive, constant irrigation that can promote fungal pathogens.

Sprigging presents an even greater challenge. Sprigs are essentially fragments of stolons and rhizomes with minimal root tissue. They must survive entirely on stored energy until they can generate roots and begin photosynthesizing. A starter fertilizer application provides the immediate, localized phosphorus necessary to trigger root elongation and aggressive lateral spread, drastically reducing grow-in time.

The Balance of Ignition 20-23-15 While phosphorus is the star of establishment, it cannot work alone. Ignition 20-23-15 is engineered with a carefully balanced profile to support the entire plant during grow-in.

  • 20% Nitrogen (55% Slow-Release): Immediate top growth is not the primary goal during establishment, but the plant still requires nitrogen to generate the photosynthetic tissue necessary to fuel root growth. The 55% slow-release nitrogen in Ignition provides a controlled, steady feed. This prevents the explosive flush growth that can exhaust the plant's energy reserves and overshadow root development, while still providing enough energy for healthy leaf expansion.
  • 23% Phosphorus: The massive payload of phosphorus is immediately available to the developing roots, driving downward expansion and rapid tacking of sod.
  • 15% Potassium: Establishment is highly stressful. The plant is subjected to transplant shock, fluctuating moisture levels, and intense heat. Potassium regulates water use within the plant and fortifies cell walls, vastly improving the new turf's ability to survive the stressful grow-in period.

Application Strategy The timing and placement of starter fertilizer are critical. For sodding, Ignition 20-23-15 should be applied directly to the prepared soil bed immediately prior to laying the sod. This places the phosphorus exactly where the new roots will emerge. Applying starter fertilizer over the top of newly laid sod is less efficient, as the immobile phosphorus will take longer to migrate through the thatch layer and into the root zone.

For sprigging, apply immediately after the sprigs are cut in and firmed, ensuring the granules are integrated into the top layer of soil along with the sprigs.
