In the world of granular turf fertilizer, the physical size of the prill can be as important as the chemical analysis it contains. Turf managers must select between standard-grade granules (often referred to as fairway grade) and greens-grade granules. While they may share a similar N-P-K analysis on the label, their application, behavior on the ground, and agronomic impact are different. The Physics of SGN (Size Guide Number) The primary distinction between the two grades is physical size, measured by the Size Guide Number (SGN). SGN is a metric that describes the median diameter of the granules in millimeters, multiplied by 100.
A standard fairway-grade granular fertilizer typically has an SGN ranging from 200 to 250 (roughly 2.0 to 2.5 millimeters in diameter). These larger prills are heavy, easy to broadcast over wide areas, and cost-effective to manufacture. They are perfectly suited for roughs, sports fields, lawns, and higher-cut fairways where the turf canopy is thick enough to easily swallow and hide the larger granules.
Greens-grade fertilizers, conversely, have a much smaller SGN, typically ranging from 90 to 120 (0.9 to 1.2 millimeters). These prills are remarkably fine, almost sand-like in texture. Manufacturing greens-grade fertilizer requires specialized equipment and tight tolerances to ensure uniformity and prevent dust.

Formulation Nuances Because greens-grade fertilizers are applied to turf under extreme stress (low HOC, heavy traffic), their chemical formulations are often refined. This provides a highly controlled, incredibly smooth release curve, preventing any flush growth that would disrupt green speeds. While standard-grade blends remain the undisputed workhorse for acreage, fine turf demands precision. Greens-grade granulars deliver the exact nutritional profile required without compromising the integrity of the surface or the sharpness of your reels.
