As the intense heat of summer begins to break and the days grow shorter, the physiological priorities of turfgrass undergo a dramatic shift. Whether you are managing warm-season grasses preparing for dormancy or cool-season grasses recovering from summer stress, the focus must transition from driving upward leaf growth to reinforcing cellular structure and building subterranean reserves. One important element in this autumnal shift is Potassium. Knowing when and how to deploy high-potassium fertility, such as Afterglow 17-0-34, can support winter preparation where soil or tissue testing shows a need.
Potassium (the 'K' in N-P-K) is often referred to as the turf's immune system. Unlike Nitrogen, which is incorporated into the physical structure of the plant (proteins, chlorophyll), Potassium remains in solution within the plant's sap. It acts as an internal regulator, controlling the opening and closing of stomata for water management, facilitating enzyme activation, and driving the transport of carbohydrates from the leaves down into the root and rhizome systems.
In the fall, this carbohydrate transport is paramount. The plant is sensing the changing day length and temperature, triggering a process called "hardening off." The turf is frantically photosynthesizing, creating energy (carbohydrates) not for immediate growth, but for storage. High levels of Potassium are required to move these carbohydrates downward and pack them tightly into the storage organs.

That does not make potassium a stand-alone antifreeze or guarantee protection from winterkill. Cold acclimation depends on species, cultivar, temperature patterns, drainage, mowing, traffic, and balanced nutrition. Correcting a documented deficiency can remove one avoidable source of stress.
The Timing of the Switch The transition to a high-potassium blend should not be sudden, nor should it wait until the first frost. The goal is to build up internal Potassium levels while the plant is still actively taking up nutrients and photosynthesizing.
For warm-season grasses in the transition zone, the switch should typically occur in late August to mid-September. This is when night temperatures begin to reliably drop, signaling the end of the peak summer growth curve. Applying Afterglow 17-0-34 at this time provides a crucial 1:2 ratio of Nitrogen to Potassium. The moderate 17% Nitrogen (with 70% slow-release) maintains acceptable color and density without forcing vulnerable succulent growth, while the massive 34% Potassium load drives the hardening process.
For cool-season grasses, the fall is a period of aggressive recovery from summer heat stress. While early fall might still warrant a balanced nitrogen application to push lateral spread and tillering, the late fall application (often the final application of the year) is the perfect window for high Potassium. Applying Afterglow in late October or November helps cool-season turf store massive amounts of energy, promoting incredible root density and ensuring a rapid, robust awakening in the spring.
The Danger of Late Nitrogen A common and devastating mistake in fall turf management is applying high rates of quick-release nitrogen too late in the season. This overrides the plant's natural hardening signals, forcing it to produce new, tender leaf tissue instead of storing energy. When the first hard freeze hits, this succulent tissue is destroyed, and the plant enters winter severely depleted of carbohydrate reserves, leading to widespread winterkill and delayed, weak spring recovery.
